Cash-pay versus going through insurance

This page describes how our service and its pricing work and makes no clinical statement, so it carries no clinical review. Last updated 2026-10-07.

Is it cheaper to use insurance or pay cash for weight-management medication?

Where a plan covers it, going through insurance is usually much cheaper than paying cash, so checking the formulary first is worth the time.

The trade is time and uncertainty: coverage often depends on a prior authorisation and sometimes on documented attempts at other approaches, and that process takes weeks whether or not it ends in coverage.

TRD Labs is cash-pay, does not bill insurers and does not file claims; it provides itemised receipts, and whether an administrator reimburses against one is their decision.

What each route actually involves

Through insurance, coverage for weight-management medication depends on your plan, often on a prior authorisation, and sometimes on documented attempts at other approaches first. When it is covered, it is usually much cheaper than paying cash. When it is not, the process has still consumed weeks.

Paying cash removes the coverage question and the authorisation wait, and replaces them with a price. That is the entire trade.

What we are

We are cash-pay. We do not bill insurance and we do not file claims on your behalf. If your plan covers this category, checking that first is very likely worth your time, and we would rather say so than take a payment you did not need to make.

We cannot tell you whether your plan covers it. Your insurer can, and the question to ask them is whether weight-management medication is on your formulary and what prior authorisation it requires.

Receipts

We provide itemised receipts. Whether an insurer or a health account will reimburse against one is their decision, and we do not promise it.

Side by side

This table does not say which route anyone should take, and it does not predict what any plan covers. Only the insurer can answer that.

Questions

Do you take insurance?
No. We are cash-pay, we do not bill insurers and we do not file claims for you.
Can I use an HSA or FSA?
We provide itemised receipts. Whether your administrator accepts one is their decision and we cannot promise it.
Should I check my insurance first?
If you have coverage, very likely yes. Ask your insurer whether weight-management medication is on your formulary and what prior authorisation it needs.
